Domain and Hosting Explained: A Guide for Business Owners

Domain, DNS, hosting and SSL explained in plain language, plus the one rule every business owner should follow: keep control in your own name.

Every website depends on a few technical pieces that business owners are often unsure about. Understanding them helps you avoid expensive mistakes, especially losing access to your own domain.

Domain name

Your domain (for example, yourbusiness.in or yourbusiness.com) is your address on the internet. You rent it from a registrar, usually yearly, and must renew it before it expires.

The most important rule: register the domain in your business's name, with an email address and login that you control. If a developer registers it in their own account, moving away later can be difficult.

DNS

DNS (Domain Name System) settings tell the internet where your website and email are hosted. They are managed at your registrar or a DNS provider such as Cloudflare. Records include A or CNAME records for your website and MX records for email.

Hosting

Hosting is the server where your website's files and database live.

  • Shared hosting: affordable and suitable for most static and small business websites.
  • VPS or cloud hosting: more resources and control, for busy stores or applications.
  • Platform hosting: included with platforms such as Shopify.
  • Static hosting: optimised for static websites and very fast.

SSL certificate

SSL enables HTTPS, encrypting data between visitors and your site and showing the padlock in browsers. Many hosts include free SSL certificates. Every business website should use HTTPS.

Business email

Email on your domain (name@yourbusiness.com) looks professional. It can come from your hosting plan or a service like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. Configure SPF, DKIM and DMARC records so your emails are less likely to land in spam.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the domain expire because renewal emails went to an old address.
  • Domain or hosting registered in a former developer's name.
  • Changing DNS without checking email records, causing email to stop.
  • Choosing hosting only on price for a busy online store.

Summary

Own your domain, choose hosting that fits your website type, always use HTTPS and set up email authentication. With these basics in place, your website and email have a stable foundation.
