Website Security Basics Every Business Should Know

Small business websites are targeted too, usually by automated attacks that look for common weaknesses. The good news is that a few consistent habits prevent most problems.

1. Use HTTPS everywhere

An SSL certificate encrypts data between visitors and your site. Redirect all HTTP traffic to HTTPS.

2. Keep software updated

If your site uses WordPress, plugins, themes or other software, apply updates regularly. Outdated plugins are one of the most common entry points for attackers. Remove plugins and themes you do not use.

3. Protect logins

• Use strong, unique passwords and a password manager.
• Enable two-factor authentication on hosting, domain, CMS and email accounts.
• Give each person their own account with only the access they need.
• Remove access for people who no longer work with you.

4. Back up regularly

Keep automated backups of files and databases, stored separately from the website server, and test that you can restore them.

5. Secure forms and integrations

• Validate form input on the server.
• Protect forms from spam.
• Never put secret API keys or passwords in public page code.
• Let payment gateways handle card data.

6. Choose reliable hosting

Reputable hosting providers keep servers patched and offer security features. Static websites have an even smaller attack surface because there is no database or login on the public site.

7. Watch for warning signs

Unexpected redirects, unknown admin users, spam pages in search results or security warnings from Google Search Console are signs something is wrong.

If something goes wrong

1. Change passwords for hosting, CMS and email.
2. Restore from a clean backup if needed.
3. Update all software and remove unknown users or files.
4. Check Google Search Console and request a review if a warning was issued.

Security is ongoing rather than a one-time task, but with these basics in place, most common threats are avoided.
